Matt August

Assistant coach - Grand Canyon

AVCA RANKING: #1

thursday, AUGUST 1st

  • Everyone loves bouncing the ball, but what about the tons of other ways to score? That is a question coach Cruz will help you understand.

  • Matthew August joined the GCU men's volleyball coaching staff in the summer of 2022 and enters his second season as an assistant coach in 2024.

August was part of the Lopes staff that led the team to its winningest season (22-8) and first NCAA tournament appearance in 2023. GCU had five players received All-America honors (one second team and four honorable mentions) from the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

August comes from Denver serving as the volunteer assistant coach for the women's volleyball program in 2021. He was part of a coaching staff that led the Pioneers to a 23-6 record and the third seed in the Summit League Championship.

Originally from Southern California, August first started playing volleyball at the age of 14 for San Clemente High School, and 949 Volleyball Club. After his high school and club career, August went on to play at UC Irvine for one season, but decided to take the junior college route the next two years at Irvine Valley College. August went on to earn Orange Empire Conference first team honors, as well as MVP in the 2016-2018 seasons.

After his two years at Irvine Valley, August planned to head overseas and play professionally. Prior to going overseas, Matthew was able to play for the USA Men’s National Team and brought home a silver medal from the NORCECA Cup in the summer of 2019. After one year of playing the U.S. professional league, the NVA, and with the USA Men’s National Team August signed a contract overseas, in the Czech Republic.

In the fall of 2019, August went to Brno, Czech Republic to start his professional career. In just his first season August led his club, Volejbol Brno to a bronze medal finish in the Czech Extraliga while leading the team in blocks, and hitting percentage. In the summer of 2020, August signed his second contract with Black Volley Beskydy, also from the Czech Republic. That season August was a top three middle blocker in the league leading his team in blocks.

David Kniffin

Head COACH - Uc Irvine

AVCA RANKING: #5

FRIDAY, AUGUST 2nd

  • Practice and matches are a different atmosphere, but Coach Souza will explain how to stay calm during close matches, and motivated during practices.

  • Hired in July of 2012, David Kniffin is now the longest tenured volleyball coach in Anteater history.

As a coach, Kniffin has received several honors: Big West Conference Co-Coach of the Year (2022), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year (2015), Volleyball Magazine National Coach of the Year (2013) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year (2010).

Kniffin became just the second coach in the history of NCAA men's volleyball to guide a team to the NCAA Championship in his first season (2013). Since then, Kniffin has led the Anteater squad to conference and regular season titles as well as multiple trips to the NCAA Tournament (2015, 2018).

As an assistant coach, Kniffin won two NCAA Championships with UC Irvine Men’s Volleyball (2007, 2009) and coached in the NCAA Championship match with University of Illinois Women’s Volleyball (2011).

As a student-athlete, Kniffin graduated from UC Irvine with a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 2003. As a senior, he helped guide UC Irvine to the school’s first No. 1 ranking and first-ever post-season victory. Kniffin earned UCI Scholar-Athlete and MPSF All-Academic honors during his Anteater career.

Internationally, Kniffin played professionally for CAI Voleibol Teruel (Spain) for two seasons, helping the team win the division championship (2006). He has served the USA National Team Development Pipeline as a coach and scout, worked for the FIVB World League Finals (2008) and continues to facilitate international volleyball tours for both men and women.

Prior to UC Irvine, Kniffin attended both Loyola Marymount University (2000) and Los Angeles Pierce College (2001) and started on the undefeated state-championship team. A graduate of Chico Senior High, Kniffin did not play organized high school volleyball until the spring of his junior year, after he and a group of friends successfully petitioned the Chico Board of Education to provide a sanctioned opportunity at both high schools.

Off the court, UC Irvine men’s volleyball has seen a dramatic increase in alumni engagement and support in the Kniffin era.

Academically, the Alumni Association has twice named a men’s volleyball player as Student-Athlete of the Year (2013, 2015) while the Intercollegiate Athletic Department has awarded men’s volleyball with the UCI Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award on three occasions (2019, 2020, and 2021). In addition, seven student-athletes have completed graduate degrees since 2013 while many more have made Dean’s List in their respective schools.

Starting in 2022, Coach Kniffin will serve on the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics (CACIA), which provides critical perspective on academics, student-athlete health and well-being, compliance, and other matters.
